In Spain, 14 major fires have been reported, with emergency services stretched to their limits and locals forced to flee their homes. The fires have already scorched 157,000 hectares in Spain, nearly double the annual average, and at least seven people have died. Efforts to control the fires include water bombing and controlled burns, but high winds and intense conditions have caused previously extinguished flames to reignite. Nearly 5,000 firefighters are battling the blazes, with support from local communities and disaster assistance being deployed to affected regions.

Despite water bombing and controlled burns to decrease the fuel load, previously extinguished flames are continuing to reignite. We're completely powerless because there is no way to extinguish all fires in Galicia. At least seven people have died, while many others are sick from the smoke blanketing Spain, which has seen 157,000 hectares scorched this year, almost double the annual average. In the province of Arensei, locals are on high alert. Nearly 2,000 litres of water collected in case the flames change direction, but in Portugal, it's now or never.
