On the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre on July 11, Mevlida Omerovic will finally bury the few identified remains her husband in a cemetery for victims, where 6,750 people are already interred. The partial remains of six other victims will also be buried that day.

Mevlida Omerovic, whose husband was killed during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, will finally lay his partial remains to rest alongside thousands of other victims. The remains, identified 12 years ago, consist only of fragments, as many bodies from the massacre were dismembered and buried in multiple locations, making identification and recovery difficult.

The Srebrenica massacre, recognized as genocide by international courts, resulted in the deaths of about 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys. Forensic experts continue to work on identifying victims, while ethnic divisions and disputes over the events and victim numbers persist in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mevlida Omerovic's husband was among the thousands of Bosnian Muslims murdered in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. His partial remains, pieces of his jawbone, were uncovered and identified in a mass grave 12 years ago. Omerovic did not bury them at the time, in hope more might emerge. But none did. Now, she will bury what she has in a cemetery for Srebrenica victims, where 6,750 are already interred. I had two children with him. We were happy. We had a nice life, but everything that is nice is short-lived. I only have a memory of him now, and these two children are nothing more. He was a good, peaceful man. What else can I say? In the war that followed the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the town of Srebrenica was designated a UN safe area for civilians. But nationalist Serb forces overran Srebrenica. They killed about 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the following days. Omerovic, with her mother and two children, ran from their village near Srebrenica for shelter in a UN compound on the night of July 11, 1995. Her husband tried to escape through the woods with other men. The news of his execution came days later. Dragana Vucetic is a forensic expert working on the identification of the Srebrenica victims. She said there are currently several thousand cases. Srebrenica is an extremely complex project because a large number of victims had been buried on many different locations. In primary and secondary mass graves where bodies were dismembered. So we are not able to find complete bodies. Ethnic divisions remain a source of tension in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was split into autonomous Bosniak, Croat and Serb entities under the 1995 Dayton Peace Treaty. The massacre was declared a genocide by two international courts. The designation has been persistently denied by the leaders of Bosnian Serbs and by neighbouring Serbia. Both question the number of victims.

The Trump administration branded the event as one of the steps it is taking to reshape its relationship with the African continent.
