The search continues in central Texas for the more than 160 people still missing from the deadly floods that hit over the Fourth of July. CBS News reporter Karen Hua has more.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in central Texas after severe flooding resulted in significant loss of life and left more than 160 people unaccounted for. Kerr County has been particularly affected, with 95 of the 119 confirmed deaths occurring there. 

Authorities, alongside local and international teams, are using heavy equipment to clear flood debris and search for missing individuals. Volunteer groups, including nonprofits from across the country, have joined the recovery efforts, providing resources and assistance to those impacted by the disaster.

Recovery operations ongoing in Texas as more than 160 still missing

But first, we are following flooding in two different states, devastating and deadly flooding hitting New Mexico. We're telling you right now that we're aware from first responders, three confirmed deaths there so far. You can see the water rushing in. That river there rose nearly 20 feet in just 30 minutes. And also, as you see the video out of Texas and the search going on there, the death toll is only climbing. So here's what we know there. Search and rescue missions are still underway after flooding in the central part of that state. 119 people are now confirmed dead, 95 of those are in Kerr County alone. More than 160 people are still missing at this hour. We've coordinated a team with a local construction company, the Texas Department of Public Safety, some fire departments from within Kerr County, a fire department from Acuna, Mexico. And we are looking and searching the deeply impacted flood debris along the river. So these areas are where a lot of this debris is bottlenecked. So it's a lot of large trees, it's a lot of the vehicles, it's a lot of home structures have built up in these areas. So we are using very heavy equipment, excavators, skid loaders, to remove this mineral and do a deep impact search where this is. 160 still missing. Let's get to CBS News reporter Karen Wah live in Centerpoint, Texas. Karen, what's the latest on the recovery efforts there? Hey, Reid, good to be with you. So where we're standing right now is actually one of these volunteer checkpoints. We have these nonprofits who've come from all across the country. And the nonprofit we're actually profiling today, they're called Mountain Meals. They're based out of North Carolina. And they're all folks who experienced the damage after Hurricane Helene, if you remember that in Asheville from last year, they've come here to really pay it back or pay it forward because they heard they just got so much generosity during their time of need. And now they're here in Texas trying to provide some assistance as well. Where we're standing right now, you can see pretty clearly, there's a lot of debris. As we just heard from that official, excavators are being used to clean up around here. There are so many downed trees, so many damaged homes, still some boats and cars that are stuck in trees. It's really just such an overwhelming site. So this is not only a point of cleanup, but also where volunteers are gathering, helping each other with resources and just a center point, quite literally, of where they're going to be dispersing out their resources.

The Trump administration branded the event as one of the steps it is taking to reshape its relationship with the African continent.
