This is a reversal from last week, when the Pentagon announced some shipments would be paused. We're going to send some more weapons, we have to, they have to be able to defend themselves, they're getting hit very hard now. And to that point, Russia has intensified its attacks on several targets in recent weeks. Just yesterday, a Russian missile strike in Kharkiv killed several people and injured dozens more. CBS News Pentagon reporter and producer Eleanor Watson has more on this for us and joins us now from the Pentagon. Good morning to you, Ellie. So what types of weapons will Ukraine now receive and does the U.S. really have enough to send? The Pentagon confirmed that it will resume sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine after pausing certain shipments, as you mentioned, just last week. U.S. officials have not said what specifically will be sent to Ukraine, but what Ukraine has been asking for, really pleading for, are additional Patriot air defense system interceptor missiles. Ukraine already has several Patriot batteries and could use more, but what they really need are the interceptor missiles that can shoot down incoming drones and missiles aimed at Ukrainian cities. President Trump last week and at the NATO summit last month expressed a willingness to send more of these missiles to Ukraine. But the issue is the U.S. uses these missiles, too. As an example, just last month, when Iranian missiles targeted a U.S. airbase in Qatar, the U.S. used two Patriot batteries to shoot down the incoming ballistic missiles in what officials have called one of the largest, if not the largest, single Patriot engagement in history. The key nature of these weapons is what prompted the review that led to the brief pause last week. That's a really interesting detail that viewers may not consider. The U.S. is actively in need of these same weapons. And we've heard President Trump be adamant that Europe needs to step up. It needs to do more. So why now the change of heart, then? Because the U.S. still needs these weapons, and it still wants Europe to step up. So why is it now able to send them? Well, this isn't the first time that the Trump administration has paused weapons promised under the previous administration and then resumed them, recognizing that, although Europe is stepping up, the U.S. holds many of the weapons that are critical to Ukraine's defense. This latest red light, green light, comes after President Trump's calls last week with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky described his call with President Trump as one of the most productive calls he's had yet with President Trump, as Trump said he was, quote, very unhappy with his call with Putin. Trump has expressed frustration that although he wants to end the war, Russia continues to bombard Ukrainian cities, launching in just the last few weeks some of the largest aerial attacks of missiles and drones since the war began over three years ago.
