In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie Rayno takes a look at the potential for cold and snow as we head into January.

Meteorologists are forecasting a prolonged period of cold weather for the Great Lakes, Northeast, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic through mid-January. An upper low is expected to remain nearly stationary, sending repeated waves of cold air from the Yukon and Northwest Territories into these regions. 

Light snow is anticipated for New Year's Eve, with the possibility of a coating to an inch in cities like New York and Boston, while heavier amounts are possible west and north of the I-95 corridor. Another chance for snow is expected around January 8th and 9th, though models differ on the potential for a significant storm, and uncertainty remains regarding the exact impacts.

Widespread cold into mid-January

And certainly a much different pattern over the next 10 days. It is going to be cold from the lakes toward the northeast, lots of snow, downwind of the lakes. We're tracking a little bit of snow across the upper midwest into the northeast, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, tricky little snow. We're also going to keep an eye on the time frame of about a week from now next week as we get toward the 8th and 9th of January. So next week I think there's a potential for snow, it's a little up in the air, but I do want to show you the pattern across the country as we go over the next 10 days and you can see while it's going to stay cold from the lakes toward the northeast and in the parts of the mid-Atlantic here, take a look at what's going on. Let me put this up here, I don't know why I did that. So let me show you this. You've got this upper low here and what's going to happen is this is going to sit here pretty much over the next 10 days and what it does is it just sends shots of cold air into the midwest and northeast, follow the wind flow, where's it coming from? Right in here, the Yukon and northwest territories here. So this is what the pattern looks like this evening. As we get toward Wednesday, look at the upper low, continue to spin around Hudson Bay. This is Friday, this is January 2nd, upper low's here. What do you have? Northwesterly flow and the cold air just keeps coming. So that's the second. Let's go to a week from now, let's go to Tuesday the 6th. What do you have here? Still a dip in the jet stream across the eastern U.S. and what are you looking for? Look at the wind flow. Where's it coming from? Northwest territories, keeping it on the cold side here. Let's get toward 10 days from now, this is the 8th. This is where the pattern begins to change a little bit. This upper low, which is in here, let's go back. It's there, watch what happens by Thursday. It leaves and that's when you finally get some moderation, a little bit. Let's get toward the 9th and the 10th and you can see you have more, a little bit of cold but for the most part you've got a little bit of a zonal flow and then next weekend another shot of cold air comes in. So for the most part from now through mid-January it's generally going to be cold in the lakes, northeast and at times in the mid-Atlantic. Now, I want to take you to New Year's Eve because we were talking about this since last week. I have a U.S. map because I want to zoom in a little bit here. This is the piece of energy, this little short wave coming on south. Now, remember what I talked about last week. The farther this digs or moves to the south, the farther the south the snow will be. Not a big snow but a snow that could be a coating or an inch or two and watch what happens here. This is the European model. This is Wednesday evening so this is New Year's Eve. Watch how this comes south. And I mention this because what I'm concerned about is that while you're going to get snow across the Midwest and northeast, I'm worried if that New York City could get a little sneaky snow. I think it would be New York City, I-95 on north and east. Of course, you're going to get it west and north of the 95 corridor but I'm starting to worry that there could be a little bit of snow New Year's Eve around New York City. Watch the surface panel here on the European. So here comes, this is Wednesday, here comes your snow. Little bit here across the upper Midwest. There it is. That's Wednesday afternoon, so tomorrow afternoon. Then tomorrow evening starts going across parts of the lakes. Here it is, not a lot. And then moving forward, see right in here, this is New Year's Eve. You see you have a little low pressure system here and a little bit of snow shown around New York City. Now, I didn't think it would get to New York City initially but I think we're going to keep an eye on that. Do I think it's a lot? No, but it could be a coating to an inch. Little sneaky here up toward Boston as well. You see that right in there. Not a lot but enough that it could cause problems here. Of course, you'll get higher amounts western parts of Pennsylvania. So when you look at our snow map here for this system, there it is, and let me put this on full screen here. I would worry that you get a coating, reduce visibility here, a little coating to an inch, and I'm wondering if this can get in toward New York City, Long Island, and Boston. I don't think it would get to Philadelphia. That's something to keep an eye on. Again, it's not a big storm but it could be a disruptive system. Now, I want to go back then because as I mentioned, after this goes by, it gets very quiet across the country until the latter half of next week. I still think there's an opportunity for snow in the mid-Atlantic and northeast as we get into Thursday and Friday of next week, about the 8th and the 9th here. Let me show you the pattern. Things have changed a little bit here. I don't know why it keeps doing that. So there's a little trough coming in here. This is Monday and Tuesday. What this is going to do is this brings an injection of cold air as we get in a week from now and then that sets us up. You have the cold air. Now, yesterday, and you see this a lot with the pattern, the models were showing this piece of energy digging all the way south along the east coast, forming a storm and then pushing it offshore. The Europeans aren't showing that now. It's showing something a little different. Still a snow threat but a little different and I'm not sure what to make of it. Instead, as we get into Wednesday, you get the cold air. Here it is and then you get this system in the southern branch and watch it move east. There it goes. And then that moves across the northeast with the possibility of some snow and ice from the mid-Atlantic into the northeast. Now, the modeling suggests it's not a lot. There's an alternative solution next week, though, that was more in line of what it looked like yesterday in the European. This is the Canadian. See, the Canadian does something totally ... See, look, it's digging the trough, right? And we go back to the part that if this trough is a little farther west, a storm can come up the coast, although modeling shows, at least on the Canadian, the storm does form, but the trough is too far east and it steers it out to sea. Not sure what's right yet, but I still think if you're looking for a widespread snow, let's keep an eye on Thursday and Friday of next week. That's the timeframe to watch, and that's to feed.
