With Thanksgiving coming, Christmas trees will soon be going up in homes all over America. Most artificial trees are made overseas, and the president's tariffs are making them more expensive. At the same time, prices of real trees are holding steady.

In contrast, the prices of real Christmas trees, such as those grown at Dutchman Tree Farms in Michigan, have remained steady, making them a potentially more attractive option for consumers.

Industry representatives for artificial trees are lobbying for tariff relief, arguing that their products should be treated like other agricultural imports that are not grown in the U.S. Meanwhile, real tree growers are hoping that the tradition and sensory experience of real trees will boost their sales during the holiday season.

More than 1,500 workers cut and wrap row after row of pines. This year, they'll ship out over half a million real Christmas trees. Everything we start, we start from seed. Scott Powell helps run the 9,000-acre family farm. Our desire is for folks to put a real, live, North American-grown Christmas tree in their home. Tariff-free? Tariff-free. That's grown by families. While Powell's tree prices haven't grown, the price of imported plastic trees is up. The majority are made in Asia and subject to President Trump's tariffs. We basically went from zero to 20 to 30, depending on the country of origin. Chris Butler is the CEO of National Tree Company. While he's had to pass along some costs to consumers, he says 85 percent of Americans still choose artificial trees. He's actively lobbying lawmakers to push for tariff relief. We want to be treated the same as bananas, coffee, mangoes, et cetera. Those things are not grown in the U.S. We know that those are now being exempted. Our raw materials are not available in the U.S., and so we think we should be treated in the same way. For the Pena family in Michigan, it's tradition. It drove them to hand-pick this 8-foot-tall Fraser fir. The smells trigger those memories growing up, and I just want to provide that for my family. With that scent, farmers like Powell are banking on to boost sales. It's the smell and the joy of bringing that real tree into their home. That's what we're really selling.
