Staff from the Coastal Administration and a private association are working to preserve the structure, which has evolved from wood and coal power to solar-powered LED technology.

Although the lighthouse was automated in 1986 and no longer requires a resident keeper, it remains an important navigational aid for ships, especially during technological failures. Locals maintain a strong emotional connection to the lighthouse, regarding it as a symbol of orientation, stability, and heritage.

Their destination lies just above the horizon, 15 kilometers off Norway's west coast – the Hestjeret lighthouse. It's braved the elements for almost 150 years and now, like many of its fellow lighthouses, is in need of renovation. Staff from the Coastal Administration and a small private association have set out to check the progress in the battle against salt, water and wind. The conditions out here are pretty harsh. You can see that corrosion sets in quickly. We do maintenance work, repaint and try to keep it all in good condition. But it wears out quickly. The lighthouse has weathered many storms and saved many lives. Its beacon was first powered by wood and coal, later by oil. Today it uses LED technology with solar power. Its light is indispensable for ships when on-board technology fails or falls victim to treacherous weather conditions. When ships sail past, they see this lighthouse and then the next one. They form a chain along the entire coast. You'll always see a light as long as you have a map and a compass. In the old days, there was a lighthouse keeper who worked and lived here with his family. A small group of locals is trying to preserve this heritage. In 1986, the lighthouse was automated and the lighthouse keeper moved ashore. The calendar on the wall still bears witness. The lighthouse means everything to us. It's the first thing you see when you get up in the morning and go to the window. Everyone looks out to sea to check on the weather, the wind and the lighthouse. Even if it's no longer as important as it used to be, the lighthouse provides orientation, light and stability. And who could resist such views?
