Airports in Europe are seeing a sharp rise in drone-related disruptions, analysis by The Cube shows. What are these drones interrupting passengers, and who's behind them?

Since September, more than 24 airports in 12 European countries have experienced significant disruptions due to drone activity, resulting in flight cancellations and hours-long shutdowns. Belgium has been particularly affected, with Brussels airport brought to a standstill after multiple incidents in a single week.

Reports of such incidents have increased sharply between 2024 and 2025, with some officials and experts suggesting the possibility of coordinated hybrid attacks. While some have accused Russia of orchestrating these events, investigations remain ongoing and Moscow has denied any involvement.

Why are airports shuttering over drone sightings?

How and why are drones shutting down Europe's runways? Since September, drone incidents have affected more than 24 airports in 12 countries, causing unprecedented disruption across Europe. Belgium has been the hardest hit, reporting 10 incidents in the space of a single week, bringing Brussels airport to a standstill and prompting dozens of flight cancellations. We see several drones simultaneously, which also fly in formation. Not everyone can do that, because it requires some skill or skills. And it is in line with hybrid techniques that we also see in other countries, in other theaters. Drone activity near European airports is not a new phenomenon, but the Cube's analysis of media reports showed that reporting on disruptions quadrupled between 2024 and 2025. These reports show that incidents have become more disruptive and more likely to lead to hours-long shutdowns and delays. In contrast, incidents in 2024 were minor and barely reported on. From 2025 onwards, reports of drone-related airport disruptions became more intense. In Denmark, police inspector Jens Jespersen said several large drones were found flying around Copenhagen airport for more than three hours. He described the culprit as a capable actor with both the will and tools to show off. In October, Chancellor Friedrich Merz claimed that Russia was behind most of these drone flights, calling them espionage attempts intended to unsettle the population. Experts say the drone incidents form a coordinated hybrid attack designed to sow public doubt, mirroring tactics Russia has already used in Europe. While Russian involvement cannot be ruled out, the reality is that many investigations are still open-ended. Moscow has denied any role in the incidents.
