A powerful winter storm has impacted millions across the Midwest, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and whiteout conditions, particularly near the Great Lakes. The storm has led to numerous traffic accidents, road closures, and significant disruptions to air travel, with effects reaching beyond the upper Midwest.

Authorities reported over 200 vehicle incidents in Minnesota, including jackknifed tractor trailers and a Walmart truck requiring towing. A 60-mile stretch of Interstate 94 in North Dakota was closed due to hazardous conditions. Although winter storm warnings are expected to end soon, travel difficulties are likely to persist.

Millions of Americans under a winter storm alert, right in the middle of the holiday travel rush. That is not good. Take a look at this. Look at this heavy snowfall and gusty winds, leading to whiteout conditions near the Great Lakes. There have been multiple accidents. Air travel, as you might expect, has also been impacted, and the problems go far beyond the upper Midwest. So, we've got correspondents tracking the conditions nationwide. But we're going to begin with you, CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano. We need some good news from you. Good morning. Well, Gail, I've got good news. The heavy rain that came through the northeast last night is over for now, but the center of this storm is still hundreds of miles away and still has to come through. That's where it's wreaking some serious havoc. So, I want to show you the radar right off the bat. The rain is a little more sporadic east. That's in the warm sector. But on the west side of this, you see the blues and the whites. That's all the cold, and that swirl is right over Green Bay. That's the center of the storm, which is still increasing in intensity. Winter storm warnings are posted. We've got the blizzard warnings as well. Make effect snow warnings. So, the snow is the big story. So, let's get to Minneapolis, where's Jonah Kaplan from our CBS station out in Minneapolis is tracking the rain that has now turned to snow. Good morning, Jonah. Rob, good morning. We've got wind gusts about 50 miles an hour, and this is the first significant snowfall of the season. And remembering how to drive in these conditions, well, it's not as easy as remembering how to ride a bike. Some people forget. And let's take a look at the conditions, because we talked about we were experiencing whiteout, blizzard-like conditions from a lot of people. The State Patrol this morning reporting more than 200 spinoffs, slide-offs, cars off the road across Minnesota, plows trying to keep up with some areas, seeing more than six inches of snow. And look at this Walmart truck needing to get towed out of the snow on I-94. More than a dozen tractor trailers jackknifing in northwestern Minnesota, and in North Dakota, a 60-mile-long stretch of I-94 shut down yesterday evening west of Fargo. And of course, the winter storm warning expected to end later today, but we're still expected to have a lot of travel issues. Rob, back to you. All right, Jonah. Stay warm there.
