The skiing and snowboarding community in Whistler is trying to come up with alternative ways to enjoy the winter sport during warmer months after being told summer camps can't operate on a popular glacier due to safety concerns.

Whistler Blackcomb stated that these changes prevent safe recreational use of the glacier for the foreseeable future, impacting both local ski programs and national teams that have used the site for training.

Researchers attribute the glacier's thinning to rising temperatures linked to greenhouse gas emissions, noting an average surface lowering of about one to 1.2 metres in recent years. The shrinking glacier not only affects the ski industry but also has ecological consequences, such as altering stream flows and increasing water temperatures, which can stress local salmon populations. Efforts are underway to find alternative training locations and develop new facilities for future summer programs.

For more than 30 years, athletes have hit the slopes during the summer months on Horstman Glacier, but operators say this year it's not safe for recreation, what's being called a blow to the ski community. It is very important that it comes back, I think for the whole ski industry and for the life cycle of the athlete and building champions because we've had so many champions come out of this program. In a statement to CBC News, Whistler Blackcomb writes it's unable to continue hosting summer camps on the glacier for the foreseeable future because summer conditions, related to snowpack and glacier melt, prevent safe operations. The whole ski industry is negatively impacted by this. It's not just us as a company, but it's the national ski teams that train with us. That was the one place where Canada could train itself and take care of itself for obviously a much less cost than having to fly to Europe or go to South America, which are the alternatives. Researchers say Horstman, like other glaciers in the province, are thinning due to warmer temperatures driven by greenhouse gas emissions. In the last several years, we've seen on average about 1 to 1.2 metres of surface lowering, so averaged over the glacier. And so as that happens, you start to expose rock. The glacier is getting smaller. Biologists say those shrinking glaciers create a ripple effect on the ecosystem, such as influencing stream flow patterns and affecting the water's temperature. We see anything above 18 degrees in water can cause physiological stress to salmon. So without that slow melt of glacial water, keeping water cool, salmon can become thermally stressed. John Smart, meanwhile, hopes to continue summer camp operations on a mountain in the Whistler area and says he's looking at ways to build a new permanent facility for future programs.
