Kilmar Abrego Garcia was released from Putnam County Jail in Tennessee and has been reunited with his family while he awaits trial, according to his attorney.

Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador despite a judge's order prohibiting his removal due to safety concerns, has returned to the United States. After being detained on human trafficking charges, which he denies, he has now been released from pretrial detention pending his criminal trial.

Although he currently faces federal charges, Abrego-Garcia also remains subject to deportation due to his illegal entry into the U.S. in 2011 and an active deportation order. While he cannot be sent back to El Salvador, U.S. authorities have notified his legal team that they may deport him to Uganda as part of a new arrangement, making his future in the country uncertain.

What's next for Kilmar Abrego Garcia after release from jail

We begin tonight with the return home for Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, who was wrongly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador. A judge ordered the Trump administration to bring him back to the United States in June. He was then detained in a Tennessee jail on a human trafficking charge, which he denies. CBS Immigration reporter Camilo Montoya Galvez joins us now. Camilo, first of all, remind us how we got here and why this case got so much attention. Well, John, Kilmar Abrego-Garcia was mistakenly deported to the country of El Salvador back in March, despite a judge's order from 2019 under the first Trump administration that the government could not send him there because of concerns that he could be persecuted by gangs. And despite acknowledging that it made a legal mistake in this case, the Trump administration for months refused to return this man back to American soil, arguing that he was a public safety threat and a gang member. They only returned him to the U.S. in early June, but only so he could face serious federal charges related to human smuggling. The Justice Department is alleging that this man, before his deportation to El Salvador, was transporting people who had entered the country illegally from the Texas border to Maryland. But now he has been released from pretrial detention until the start of his criminal trial that is set to commence next year. So what happens to him next? And quickly, that new charge, is that a new charge or was that the original reason he was deported to El Salvador, this human trafficking charge? When he was deported to El Salvador, he did not have any criminal charges or convictions. But now he does still face arrest and deportation by immigration officials. Why? He entered the country illegally back in 2011 and has an active deportation order. And so technically, it is legally permissible for the Trump administration to try to deport him to any other country in the world except El Salvador, his home country. And we just got some major news. A senior Homeland Security official tells me that the Trump administration may deport this man to the East African country of Uganda as part of that new deal that we reported on earlier in the week. According to a notice, the Department of Homeland Security told his lawyers that, please let this email serve as notice that DHS may remove your client, Quilmar Armando Abrego-Garcia, to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours from now, absent weekends. So this is a striking proposition, but I'm told it is very much a possibility.
