Meteorologists are observing an early disruption of the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure high above the North Pole. This event, known as a sudden stratospheric warming, is uncommon for November and could significantly affect weather patterns.

The disruption is expected to make the polar jet stream wavier, allowing cold Arctic air to move further south. Over the next one to two weeks, regions including the prairies, northern Ontario, and northern Quebec could experience temperatures dropping to minus twenties or even minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Now, this is a massive area of low pressure well up above the North Pole, tens of kilometers above the surface. This vortex of very strong spinning wind. So if it's so far up above the surface, how does it affect our weather down here? Well, it can have a knock on effect on the polar jet stream. See when the polar vortex starts to get disrupted, which isn't uncommon. It usually happens about once a year, but not usually this early in the season. It can cause the polar jet stream down at the surface to become much wavier, and that means that the polar jet stream, which is usually trapping that cold arctic air up in the north around the North Pole, allows it to spill further and further south. And again, I said this doesn't usually happen this early in the season. This could be one of the first times on record that we see a polar vortex disruption, an event called a sudden stratospheric warming event to happen in November. And this is what we're looking at over the next few days. You'll notice a lot of disruption. What usually looks very contained and organized up in the north becomes much more disorganized. And that is those upper elevations. Those are that's pressure that we're looking at there. If you look at upper atmosphere temperatures, we see a similar pattern. We see this disruption, this warming event, and that can have a knock on effect down here at the surface. We're gonna see the polar jet stream get disrupted more than likely towards the end of this week and into the beginning of next week. And as that happens, that cold air that's usually trapped up over the territories will come further and further south, meaning over the next week, week and a half, two weeks, we could see temperatures drop as low as the minus twenties, even down as low as minus 30 in parts of the prairies, northern Ontario and northern Quebec.
