A WestJet plane made a "hard landing" at an airport in the Caribbean country of St. Maarten, the airline said on Sunday, but no passengers were reported injured.

A WestJet flight carrying 164 passengers landed hard at St. Maarten's airport, causing the right landing gear to collapse and the aircraft's wingtip to contact the runway. Emergency crews responded quickly, deploying foam and assisting with the evacuation of passengers via emergency slides. 

No injuries were reported, though three passengers were evaluated as a precaution. The cause of the incident is not yet known, but strong winds may have been a factor. The airport is closed while the aircraft is removed and investigations continue.

WestJet flight hits runway hard while landing in St. Maarten

A picturesque landing over a famous beach in St. Martin, but as this WestJet flight lands it hit the runway hard. Emergency crews are then seen quickly after, deploying foam to the aircraft. The airport there is a bit challenging. The runway is 7,500 feet long and it's surrounded by hills. 164 passengers were on board the Boeing 737-800, bound for a Caribbean getaway, instead evacuating down emergency slides. No one was hurt, according to the airport, but out of caution, three passengers were taken for evaluation. The airport said there was no fire, however contact with the runway caused damage to the aircraft's right wing. The right landing gear collapsed and dropped the wingtip to the ground, so consequently they had to use the emergency slides to evacuate the airplane. The airport is famous for its runway, just off Maho Beach. It's a popular tourist spot to sunbathe and watch planes land. Today, it's not clear what caused the hard landing. In a statement, WestJet says they are awaiting confirmation on the exact nature of the incident. It says it is fully cooperating with local authorities, but this aviation expert says strong winds could have played a part. The wind is generally out of the southeast there, and the runway is on just about an easterly heading as I recall, and the wind there can be kind of rough, it can be kind of gusty at times. The St. Martin airport will remain closed until further notice, as local crews work to safely remove the aircraft from the runway. Michelle Song, CBC News, Toronto.
