A pre-wedding celebration saved all the people of a Moroccan village during Friday's (September 8) deadly earthquake, which destroyed their stone and mud-brick houses while they were enjoying traditional music in an outdoor courtyard.

As people enjoyed the music at a pre-wedding celebration in a Moroccan village last Friday evening, one attendee captured the moment the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country. Only one person in the bride's village of Igyl-Talngout was injured that night, an 8-year-old boy, when a rock fell on his head. The community event that brought nearly everyone out of their homes ultimately saved their lives. Days later, groom Mohamed Boudad recalls worrying about his wife Habiba Agyir, who had been traveling to his village of Ketou the day after the quake. There was no network. Even when I wanted to call her, it was impossible to reach her. The call, you had to ascend the top of the mountain. No network at all. I didn't know what to worry about, my wife or my relatives. Everyone left their homes. The roads were so bad she had to walk more than nine miles. Boudad tells Reuters she was so traumatized by the earthquake she did not want to speak to strangers. Agyir's village has been left in ruins. Many of its people are now homeless. Her father, Mohamed Agyir, who says there were more than 600 people at the party, had set up a big tent in the courtyard of his house for wedding guests. That tent is now being used as shelter for the villagers. We are now living and sleeping outside in the cold with our families. We hope officials and authorities to rescue us with whatever they find, whether blankets, food or whatever they find. This is it. People in both villages are now sharing meager supplies, hoping for more help ahead of colder weather expected later this week.
