A vigil was held to honor Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old international student from India, who lost her life to a stray bullet in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Randhawa had moved to Canada two years ago to pursue her education at Mohawk College. She was fatally struck by a bullet shortly after she disembarked from a bus.

The community, along with Randhawa's family, is mourning her untimely death. Described as a quiet yet warm individual, Randhawa left a lasting impression on her peers in the occupational therapy program. Her uncle recalled picking her up from the airport when she first arrived in Canada, lamenting how a journey intended for a better future ended in tragedy.

Local police have started their investigation, recovering two vehicles during searches. They believe one was the intended target and the other the source of the gunfire. Police are diligently working to identify those connected to the vehicles, vowing to leave no stone unturned. The city has witnessed a sharp rise in shootings, with 60 recorded incidents this year, a significant increase from 35 the previous year.

In light of this, the Mayor of Hamilton has called for action against gun violence, emphasizing the need to end such incidents in the community. Randhawa's family is preparing to send her body back to India, even as police continue to review witness accounts and surveillance footage in their investigation.

I remember she was a child. She still looks like a child to me. Her uncle says she left India all alone in hopes of a better life. And now we're preparing to send her back as a luggage back home in India. Police say the 21-year-old was struck in the chest by a stray bullet last Thursday after getting off a bus. Harsimrat had zero capability of avoiding what was about to unfold in front of her. And everything unfolded so quickly she had no time at all to react. Still in shock, those in Randhawa's occupational therapy program say she was quiet by nature but her warmth still shone through. She was so kind and caring and I think she would have done really, really well in this field. A very kind soul. It's very, very overwhelming. Police say they've recovered two vehicles during two separate searches. One believed to be the target, the other the source of the gunshots. Investigators have been narrowing down the pool of people who are associated to these two vehicles. We will leave no stone unturned until we find you. Hamilton saw a record-breaking 60 shootings in 2024 compared to just 35 the year before. I wish we weren't here today. The city's mayor says enough is enough. These guns have to go. We cannot have this kind of violence in our city and in our community. Randhawa's uncle agrees. That's happening on our streets every day on a weekly basis. It's not acceptable. Police say they've spoken to witnesses and they're reviewing surveillance footage while Randhawa's family prepared to send her body back to her parents in India.
