President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. would impose a 19% tariff on goods from Indonesia under a new agreement with the Southeast Asian country and more deals were in the works as he continued to press for what he views as better terms with trading partners.

US President Donald Trump has revealed a new trade agreement with Indonesia, setting a 19% tariff on Indonesian goods entering the United States, down from a previously threatened 32%. In return, US goods will be able to enter Indonesia without any duties. Trump indicated that additional trade deals are being considered with other countries, and that notices will soon be sent to several smaller nations regarding new tariff rates.

Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing to respond to the US administration's proposed 30% tariff on EU goods. The EU has compiled a list of US imports, including aircraft, whiskey, and cars, worth approximately $84 billion that could be targeted for retaliatory measures. European officials have warned that the proposed tariffs could severely disrupt trade between the two major economies.

That will see the country's goods hit with a 19 per cent tariff, down on the 32 per cent that Trump had said the country would face from August 1st. US goods will be able to enter Indonesia free from all duties. Trump said Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were now keen to land more deals. But he said he was happy just sending out notices telling countries their rate. I have to tell you for the most part I'm very happy with the letters. The letters are a deal. Trump said letters would soon be going out to many smaller countries, which would face a rate of a little over 10 per cent. Meanwhile, the EU is preparing to retaliate against the 30 per cent tariff threatened for its goods. It's drawn up a list of US imports worth about $84 billion that could be targeted. That includes Boeing jets, bourbon whiskey and cars. The list was sent to member states and seen by Reuters on Tuesday. It predates Trump's weekend move to ramp up pressure on the bloc, instead being a response to his earlier duties on cars and car parts. Like other places, the EU has until August 1st to negotiate a deal. European officials say the 30 per cent rate would end normal trade between two of the world's biggest markets.
