This marks the eighth such operation in recent months and the first in the Pacific, with previous strikes occurring in the Caribbean.

The U.S. administration claims these actions are part of an armed conflict against cartels, which have been designated as terrorist organizations. However, critics, including a former DEA agent, question the legality and effectiveness of the strikes, noting a lack of evidence about the boat's cargo and arguing that destroying vessels may not significantly impact drug trafficking operations.

Turning now to the president's widening war on alleged drug trafficking, not only in the Caribbean, but now also the Pacific Ocean. A U.S. military strike last night off Columbia was the eighth strike in recent months against suspected smugglers. At least two were killed, bringing the total to 34. Here's senior national security correspondent Charlie Dagoda. New video posted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appears to show a speedboat half loaded with large black bundles slicing through the waves, a flash of bright light followed by an explosion. Then the vessel engulfed in flames. Every one of those boats that gets knocked out is saving 25,000 American lives. It's the first known military operation in the Pacific. The boat taken out off the coast of Columbia, which produces 90 percent of the cocaine that eventually is sold in the United States. They make drugs. They refine drugs. They make cocaine. They have cocaine factories. The previous seven strikes killing at least 32 people were conducted in the Caribbean near Venezuela, where the U.S. military footprint includes 10,000 troops and eight warships. The president has argued the boats were carrying drugs headed for the United States, but most of the drugs trafficked through the Caribbean are headed for Europe. As in those Caribbean strikes, no evidence was given about who was on board the boat hit last night or what exactly they were carrying. The administration has designated the cartels as terrorist organizations and claims the strikes are legitimate because the U.S. is engaged in an armed conflict. There are people traveling on international waters headed towards the United States with hostilities in mind, which includes flooding our country with dangerous, deadly drugs. Former top DEA agent Mike Vigil disputes that assessment. It really violates the uniform code of military justice. It violates human rights. And there's no proof that these boats were carrying drugs because they destroyed them. That former DEA agent also told us that blowing up a few boats will have little impact on the cartels, that they're adept at changing routes. And if Trump intends on making an impact, he'll need to target their infrastructure on land.
