The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel is legally obligated to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, amid growing concerns over the worsening crisis in the enclave.

The court also criticized Israel's ban on UNRWA, the main UN agency providing relief in Gaza, stating that Israel had not substantiated its claims that UNRWA employees are linked to terrorist groups.

Israel's foreign ministry rejected the court's findings, maintaining that it complies with international obligations and will not cooperate with organizations it accuses of terrorist ties. Palestinian representatives welcomed the court's opinion as significant for international law, despite its non-binding nature. The case was initiated after Israel restricted aid to Gaza, and while some aid has since entered, UN officials say it remains insufficient. The ruling has increased calls for countries to resume support for humanitarian organizations in Gaza.

The 11 judges of the UN's highest legal body, also known as the World Court, concluded that Israel as the occupying power violates international law by depriving Palestinians of their basic needs and by using starvation as a weapon of war. Banning UNRWA, the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees and main body providing relief in Gaza was wrong and is a major reason why the humanitarian situation has dramatically deteriorated. The court finds that Israel has not substantiated its allegations that a significant part of UNRWA employees are members of Hamas or other terrorist factions. Israel's foreign ministry has rejected the court's findings and says it's complying with its legal international obligations. It says Israel won't cooperate with an organization that is infested with terror activities. Palestinian representatives called the court's finding an important day for international law and humanity, even though they're non-binding and can't be enforced. I believe the immediate effect is for those states who first started boycotting certain international organizations to return back to funding these organizations. So we do hope that they will take a step back, review their position and abide by what international law requires. Because this is bringing the whole international system to its feet and will destroy everything we know about this system. It's either you abide by international law or you are a war criminal or a genocidal and those are two different paths. The case was brought to the ICJ by the UN General Assembly after Israel refused to let aid into Gaza between March and May last year. Since then, some aid has been allowed in, but UN officials say this is by far not enough. According to a ceasefire agreed this month, 600 trucks should be allowed to enter daily. In reality, the number is far lower. While there won't be an immediate relief for the Palestinians in Gaza, yet another strong legal opinion against Israel shows how increasingly isolated it's become.
