At last, the Louvre has reopened to tourists. Three days after thieves stole some of France's crown jewels from the Apollo Gallery. It remains closed. The brazen heist is a national embarrassment. When France's culture minister insisted in parliament that the Louvre's security systems had worked, she was boomed. French officials say the stolen pieces, including a sapphire necklace and exquisite tiara, are worth 102 million dollars. But only as long as the thieves don't break them up. Stephen Portier is a master jeweller and appraiser who asked we not show his face for security reasons, especially now. The problem for the thieves, he says, is that each stone is unique. You brought a diamond out here to show me. Do diamonds have like DNA? Each stone firstly is different. It's different by the size. It's different by the inclusions that you can find inside. That is tiny imperfections that will identify the stones as stolen from the Louvre. So risky to buy or sell. Taken apart and sold separately, the value drops by 90 percent? More than I think. Really? Yeah. The reward is going to be pretty small. I think so, yeah. Definitely, yeah. So why? Why did they do it? It's a good question. Very good question. Professionals like Mr Portier and millions of ordinary French citizens are clinging to a hope that the police will somehow catch the criminals and return the jewels intact.
