The current system uses the higher of either the average of public service salaries or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to determine annual increases, but the new proposal would rely exclusively on the CPI.

Advocates warn that this adjustment could lead to reduced long-term payments, particularly affecting the most vulnerable veterans who depend on these benefits. The Minister responsible stated that the change is intended to align with other government services and benefits, but did not directly confirm if payouts would decrease. If approved, the new formula would take effect in January 2027.

Will they be getting less money? We will continue to deliver the services and benefits. But will they be getting less money? My understanding is that we are going to be having everything in alignment across government now. Tell us if they'll be getting less money with this adjustment. So it'll depend on each individual circumstance. The change, if passed, wouldn't go into effect until January 2027. But the potential impacts go beyond the wallet.
