The city of Las Vegas is addressing concerns about artists leaving the downtown Arts District by initiating a project to provide affordable housing and creative spaces. Mayor Shelley Berkley announced that development proposals are being accepted for a new complex on over an acre of land, with plans for retail on the first floor and affordable apartments above for artists.

The proposed housing will include one- and two-bedroom units, with rents set at 80 percent of the area median income, which is about $75,000 annually for a family of four. The city is encouraging community involvement through an open house at the historic 5th Street School, where residents can learn more and share feedback about the project.

For more than a year now, the city of Las Vegas has expressed concern over artists leaving the district. And Mayor Shelley Berkley says her goal is to get artists to work and live here in apartments they can afford. The city's request for development proposals is now open to applicants who want in on the project that will be built on more than an acre of land. Mayor Berkley announcing that last week. I'm sure the first floor is going to be dedicated to retail and the rest of it is going to be affordable housing for those artists, all struggling artists in the district that want to work down there and also want to live down there. Proposals need to keep affordability in mind and have plans for one and two bedroom units with spaces for artists to create inside. Rent prices should match 80 percent of the area median income. For a family of four, that's around 75-thousand dollars a year. Something Halden-Sabry says could mean keeping more artists local. Giving them that opportunity to live in a place where it's affordable and being with other like-minded people will allow them to expand on their creativity and what they really love.
