Vatican reporter breaks down Pope Leo's first months

Today, Pope Leo asked the faithful to unite in a day of prayer and fasting for those suffering from war. It's become a common theme for a pope who has held the papacy for just over 100 days. For tonight's interview, we talked to Colleen Dully, Vatican correspondent for America Media and author of a new book, Struck Down, Not Destroyed, Keeping the Faith as a Vatican Reporter. We asked her how she would characterize Pope Leo's tenure so far. I would say this is a pope who is not in a rush. Pope Francis, if you look at his first 100 days, already had a number of those big news stories right away. We got the who am I to judge comment about gay priests, for example. He chose not to live in the apostolic palace. Pope Leo, on the other hand, he's not in a rush. He hasn't even filled the position that everyone has their eyes on, which is the position he left behind, which will be the prefect of bishops. So the person in charge of choosing bishops for the Catholic Church, making recommendations to the new pope about it. Does that speak more to Pope Leo's constitution or his care with which he has to approach the church right now? The church can't tolerate a lot of quick movement. I would say it's probably a constitution thing. He's probably aware that it's better at this moment of divisiveness in the church to proceed slowly. And also he knows that time is on his side. He's relatively young for a modern pope. But at the same time, I've learned from all these people who I've been talking to who know him that he is a very careful person. He thinks a lot about his decisions before he makes them. And the fellow Vatican reporters will tell you there are very few leaks out of this papacy. And that's also because he keeps his cards close to the chest. Let me turn now, Colleen, to your book, Struck Down, Not Destroyed. Tell me about the title. Sure. So this book is kind of a work of journalism and spiritual memoir. So it recounts my own struggles with my Catholicism over the course of reporting on a bunch of church scandals. And so I wanted to kind of capture those stories in order to communicate that even though I've seen so much of the ugliness of the church, in part, one, I want to explain those stories a little more. But two, I want to show that, you know, you can still grapple with these stories and remain a Catholic. And if you are in that place of grappling, you're not alone. In your own reflections, as you've covered the various challenges the church has faced, some of them true, deep-rooted challenges, is there a through line to what has helped you retain your faith in the face of reporting on all of those challenges to the church? Yeah. I think over the course of it, you know, I've learned, one, to lean more on God, right, rather than kind of placing certain figures on pedestals who almost inevitably fall down in various ways. And I would also say that the community is something that I've learned to lean on a lot more. I end the book with a chapter on this synodal reform process, this Francis initiative. And so much of that is about getting together with people and sharing stories, and especially stories of how people have been affected by the church. And I've come to see that as a really necessary step, not only in kind of bringing the truth to the fore, which is so important for us as journalists, and I think it's going to be so important for the Catholic church to accept the truth of its scandals in order to heal and move on from those and be able to fix them, but in another way, it also helps a community to heal. You know, sharing stories with each other, listening to each other can heal a lot of divisions between people. And I guess that for me, it's just, this is my contribution to that story.
