Kaitlynn White moved through more than 50 foster homes in 15 years, never giving college much thought, until meeting the people at Madi's Movement, who gave her the strength to succeed.

Caitlin White, a senior at the University of South Florida, reflects on her journey from spending 15 years in over 50 foster homes to nearing graduation with a degree in fine arts. She attributes her success to Maddie's Movement, a non-profit organization that supports teens aging out of foster care by providing resources and guidance for higher education. 

With the help of Maddie's Movement, Caitlin was able to navigate college applications and secure scholarships, making her one of the few foster children to pursue a college degree. She has since started her own art business and teaches art classes to children in foster care, aiming to inspire others facing similar challenges.

USF student credits non-profit for incredible journey

This is Robert Boyd in Tampa. Well, this fall, Caitlin White enters her senior year of college right here at USF, something she never thought was possible while growing up. She was in more than 50 foster homes in 15 years. Then she met Maddie's movement, which gave her the strength to grab life by the horns. Walking to class, Caitlin White still can't believe she's a student at USF. Growing up in the foster care system, she says attending college was the furthest thing from her mind. That impacted my school. It impacted my mental health, my physical health. It literally impacted every single aspect of my life. Aging out of care. I didn't have a family or support system to really bridge that gap to help me get to the places where I needed to be and where I could be. And that's when she was introduced to Effie Santos, founder of the nonprofit organization. Maddie's movement. Maddie's movement is a dream of my daughter, Madison that we lost tragically. Back in 2001, we support teens as they're aging out of the foster care system, equipping them with the resources, connection and support to be totally self sufficient. Effie says only 3% of foster children go on to earn a college degree. Yet in Florida, all of them are eligible for a free tuition. Why is that 97% gap? It's because they need the help and the support to apply to navigate the whole process and system. Maddie's movement. Help me make sure that I got all of my scholarship documents in order. Help me make sure that I got my college application and everything. Caitlin is now just two semesters away from graduating USF with a degree in fine arts. Do you think you would be a senior right now at USF if it weren't for Maddie's movement? Probably not. Caitlin even started her own business, the White Space Studios, selling art online as well as teaching art classes to kids currently in the foster care system. Art was such a big escape and such a big creative outlet. So helping these kids also find their creative outlet. It's been an incredible blessing.
