The Pentagon says a US warship has destroyed a Houthi drone heading in its direction in the southern Red Sea. Earlier, the UK Maritime Agency reported that ships were targeted in the Red Sea's Bab al-Mandab Strait and off the coast of Hodeidah.

This is a statement on background released to Al Jazeera from a Pentagon official. Quote, the USS Kearney, which has been in the Red Sea since the earlier fall, so probably September at the earliest, has destroyed one Hootie drone headed in their direction while in the southern Red Sea. At the same time, the Kearney observed at least one ballistic missile fired at a civilian commercial vessel, the merchant vessel Unity Explorer, which landed in that vessel's vicinity. The official goes on to say that the Kearney subsequently responded to their distress call, and while assisting the Unity Explorer, the Kearney shot down another Hootie drone that was headed in the direction of both the Kearney and the Unity Explorer. Now this is at least the third time since late October that the USS Kearney, which is a guided missile destroyer deployed in the Red Sea, has shot down either a UAV, better known as a drone, or a missile coming from Hootie-controlled territory inside Yemen. That's according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon also stresses that no one was injured in Sunday's incident. Ros, thank you very much for that.
