We continue to follow breaking news out of Ukraine. A U.S. official tells CBS News that Ukraine has agreed to a U.S.-backed peace proposal with only minor details left to sort out. The move comes as U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll meets with the Russian foreign minister. Russia has not commented on if they'll sign the agreement. Now, earlier today, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt posted this to social media. She said, quote, over the past week, the United States has made tremendous progress toward a peace deal by bringing both Ukraine and Russia to the table. They are a few delicate but not insurmountable details that must be sorted out and will require further talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. All right, let's go now to the BBC's Abdul Jalil Abdulaziz, who's live in Kyiv for us today. Thank you so much for your time. So if this peace deal or proposal is approved, will it have the supports of the Ukrainian people? Well, the initial document that was proposed by the U.S., the 28-point peace plan, was received here with skepticism. In fact, a lot of people regarded it as basically as a demand for capitulation. But Ukraine and President Zelensky learned one thing when dealing with Donald Trump, that any deal he offers can be negotiated and changed. And this is exactly what's happening. So there is a new revised deal. And President Zelensky says that it's doable and it has fewer points, but it has the right elements, he says. So there is certain optimism in Kyiv about this document. But there are certain issues, the most contentious points, that have been left out from the document. And those points must be discussed directly between President Zelensky and Donald Trump. And that's why the Ukrainian side says that they would like to organize this meeting as soon as possible to finalize the steps and finalize the agreement. But this is exactly one of those most contentious issues. That's the territory, what happens to the occupied territories. Russia wants those territories to be formally recognized as Russian. And Ukraine says that this is the red line that they will not cross and they will not accept any legal recognition of those territories as Russian. Okay. Abdul Jalil in Kyiv for us today. Thank you so much for your time. And now I want to bring in Nina Khrushcheva. She's a professor of international affairs at the New School in New York. Nina, thank you for joining us. What will it take for both sides, Russia and Ukraine, to sign off on this proposal? Hi, thank you. Well, I am not seeing how Ukraine, and we just heard that, how Ukraine would agree to give up the whole of Donbass territory, parts of it that Russia hasn't even invaded yet, which is something that Putin wants. And I don't think he's going to agree to less. And he already said, once again confirmed last week, that if this territory cannot be negotiated over, then it would be taken militarily. So I am not seeing how... The White House really tends to be very optimistic about its progress, which often has not been the case. I'm not seeing how two sides can agree on that, on that very territorial issue. So, Nina, what does that mean? Is this just a continuation of this war, if you don't see both sides agreeing? Well, that's how I see it. And when the U.S. plan appeared, the 28 points appeared, Vladimir Zelensky was saying, well, we would either have to lose the United States or have to stand by our dignity. Yes, potentially they will lose the United States and stand with their dignity. Because also for Zelensky, how... I mean, already his parliament already said they're not going to agree to give up these territories. Putin is not going to agree for less. And so I would imagine that... I honestly don't see that this time it can finally be resolved. I expect that there would be more iterations of negotiations, maybe next year or by next year. Okay.
