Despite the arrival of European troops in Greenland, the White House stated this does not affect the U.S. administration's intentions regarding Greenland. Russian officials have dismissed claims of a Russian threat to Greenland, while a U.S. congressional delegation is scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic leaders to reaffirm respect for their sovereignty.

On the ground, Greenland's population is anxious about the prospect of being annexed by the US. My children asked me if American soldiers were going to land, I told them I didn't know. The arrival of European troops in the territory has done little to dissuade Donald Trump, according to the White House press secretary. I don't think troops in Europe impact the President's decision-making process, nor does it impact his goal of the acquisition of Greenland at all. Trump has insisted that Greenland is crucial for his planned Golden Dome project, a missile defence system designed to protect US territory. He has claimed that China and Russia have their own designs on Greenland, claims denied by Moscow. The myth of some kind of Russian threat, rigorously promoted by Denmark and other members of the European Union and NATO for many years, is especially hypocritical. It is precisely under this far-fetched pretext that Washington has become concerned about the future of Greenland. On Friday, a delegation of US lawmakers will meet with Danish and Greenlandic leaders in Copenhagen. Ahead of the meeting, Republican Senator Tom Tillis said he believes Congress should stand quote, united in supporting our allies and respecting the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland.
