Flash mobs started as a playful social experiment in the early 2000s. A new movement sweeping the globe is urban sketching, like a flash mob with pencils. Itay Hod has the story.

Urban sketching has emerged as a worldwide movement, bringing together people of all backgrounds to create art in public spaces. With over 500 chapters across more than 70 countries, the movement encourages participants to sketch scenes directly from their surroundings, transforming sidewalks and parks into collaborative studios.

Founded in 2008 by Seattle journalist Gabriel Campanario, urban sketching emphasizes drawing on location and sharing the results in group 'throwdowns.' The movement has inspired many, including those who were once discouraged from pursuing art, to reconnect with their creativity and find community through shared artistic expression.

Just a folding chair, a sketchbook, and a good spot for inspiration. It's just so peaceful and relaxing and just wonderful. Today, that spot is under the Grand Dome at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. So picture perfect, it almost paints itself. At first, it's just her, her pen, her moment. Then, out of nowhere, someone pulls out a chair and a pad, then another, and another. Soon, the entire pavilion is overtaken, like a flash mob, with pencils. What's it like sketching with 80 other people? I love it. Welcome to Urban Sketching, a global movement with over 500 chapters in more than 70 countries that's turning sidewalks into studios, parks into pop-up galleries, and everyday people into illustrators. The only rule, draw only from location, never from memory. I owe everything to this. A college counselor once told Matt Wills he'd never make it as an artist, but thanks to Urban Sketching, he's back at it. Finding this group has completely changed my life. It all started in 2008, when Seattle journalist Gabriel Campanario started posting his sketches on Flickr, and for some reason, it caught on. So what am I doing? All right, so look at that shape right there. Goldenberg says the best part is anyone can do it. Show them the painting. There you go. Well, almost anyone. After a few hours of doodling and scribbling, it's time for the throwdown, when sketchers lay their drawings on the ground for all to see. You get out, you express yourself, even you drew today.
