The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that this is its busiest day for scheduled flights, with crews working around the clock and monitoring ongoing weather disruptions, especially in Texas.

Recent weather issues have caused hundreds of delays and cancellations, and an American Airlines flight was diverted due to fumes, resulting in precautionary hospitalizations. Air traffic controllers and TSA officers have received their first full paychecks after a government shutdown, and staffing levels have returned to normal. The FAA continues to monitor weather risks at major hubs including Atlanta, New York, and Minneapolis.

Oh, good morning, Gayle. You beat the crowds by being out here on the ramp. They are inside the terminals. The FAA says today will actually be its busiest day as far as scheduled flights go. About 250 of those will be United flights leaving here at Dulles. Crews working around the clock to make sure they get out on time and also watching the weather. You heard about the weather issues in Texas that resulted in hundreds of delays and cancellations, particularly in the Dallas area, but also impacted Houston. On Sunday, an American Airlines flight to Phoenix had to divert to Houston after the crew reported fumes in the flight deck and cabin. Four flight attendants and one passenger were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but that plane did land safely. Meanwhile, some good news. Air traffic controllers and TSA officers are getting their first full paychecks in more than a month today, along with back pay from the government shutdown. We asked Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy how the system is recovering from that shutdown. What do you say to flyers who are still a little unnerved after what they saw during the shutdown? If you can still get a ticket and you can still fly and your family still wants to see you, book that ticket, jump on a flight, and don't be afraid to fly this season. Again, I can't control the weather, I can't control the mechanics of an airplane, but things look good from the air traffic control side. We are back to staffing levels that we had before the shutdown.
