The United Nation’s cultural agency UNESCO is set to select former Egyptian antiquities and tourism minister Khaled el-Enany as the organisation’s next director.

UNESCO’s executive board has voted in favour of appointing Khaled El-Enani, Egypt’s former Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, as the agency’s next director general. El-Enani was chosen over Edouard Firmin Matoko of the Republic of Congo by a vote of 55 to 2. 

If ratified by the General Assembly, El-Enani would be the first Arab and only the second African to head UNESCO, succeeding France’s Audrey Azoulay. The United States abstained from the vote, having previously announced plans to leave UNESCO over concerns of bias. El-Enani has expressed his intention to encourage the U.S. to rejoin the organisation.

In June, Washington accused UNESCO of bias against Israel and said it will leave the organisation at the end of next year. El-Enani has said he'll work to bring the U.S. back. The 54-year-old Egyptologist served as Minister of Antiquities and later Tourism from 2016 to 2022.
