Parents in the village of Kuriga wait impatiently for any news of their missing children. 287 pupils and a teacher were kidnapped by gunmen from the village school last Thursday. As the days drag on, hopes of their return fade. 75 kilometers away, 10-year-old Yusufa Audu walks the streets of Kaduna, begging for arms in the state capital. He's got ambitions, but says without ever stepping into a classroom, he doesn't know if he will achieve them. I want to be a teacher to educate children. Yusufa is 300 kilometers away from home, while his five siblings, who have also never been to school, live with their parents. He's like millions of others on the streets. Officials in Nigeria estimate there are 10 million children out of school, but international organizations say the total is much higher. Most of the children missing from class are in the north of the country. That's why armed groups have attacked many schools and forced their closure. Aid organizations say several hundred schools have been shot, destroyed or damaged by the continuing violence in Nigeria's north and central states. Kidnappings in the northwest are largely carried out by bandits seeking ransom, while Boko Haram and ISIL-affiliated armed groups continue to attack and abduct students and teachers in the northeast. The impact on education is huge. Right now, parents told me that they are not going to send their children to school. And this is going to set development many years back. They are no longer feeling safe. They don't know if they drop off their kids in school, that they will be able to pick them up in the evening. Government data in 2022 showed that the majority of children aged 10 and above in northern states, which are plagued by insecurity, have not finished six years of basic schooling. Last year, the number of children shut out of classrooms because of the attacks was around two million. Their future is bleak. They don't have a future. They don't have anything to fall back onto. And then the system will completely, eventually collapse. How do you convince a parent that you will get the children back, that they should allow them to go to school? Aid workers say that the number of kids missing class will grow, unless Nigeria's government and the armed forces overcome the rates on schools and investment in education is increased.
