The request for cooperation from technology giants comes amid controversy surrounding the circulation of videos on X (formerly known as Twitter), now owned by Elon Musk, showing the stabbing of a Sydney Bishop. Despite demands from Australia's eSafety Commissioner to remove these videos, Musk has resisted, arguing that X is defending the rights of the Australian public by refusing censorship. This stance has garnered support from Senator Ralph Babbitt of the United Australia Party, who openly challenged the Australian Government and the eSafety Commissioner's requests.

In the legal arena, the federal court has intervened by extending an injunction that mandates the removal of the contentious footage from X until a full hearing scheduled for May 10. Interestingly, X's defense team revealed they possess a statement from the Bishop himself, supporting the availability of this footage, a view that contradicts broader calls for its removal. The opposition contends that while X should adhere to the injunction, it also highlights the challenge of enforcing Australian regulations on a global scale, emphasizing the complexity of regulating access to content across international borders.
