The United Nations Security Council has voted to extend the authorization for member states to inspect vessels suspected of violating the arms embargo on Libya. The renewed resolution, co-authored by France, allows these inspections for another six months on the high seas off Libya’s coast and was adopted with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China abstained.

Operation Irini, the only Council-mandated mission for such inspections, has faced criticism from some countries, including Algeria and China, over concerns about transparency and effectiveness. The arms embargo and related sanctions were first imposed in 2011 during Libya’s revolution, with vessel inspections authorized since 2016.

The United Nations Security Council has voted to extend the authorisation for UN member states to inspect ships suspected of violating the arms embargo on Libya. The resolution approved on Tuesday renews the permission for six months and applies to vessels located on the high seas of Libya's coast. The text was adopted with 13 votes in favour. Russia and China abstained. Before the vote, the French representative to the Council described the arms embargo as essential to prevent sporadic clashes, especially in the Tripoli region. France co-wrote the new resolution and is part of the European Union's Operation Irini, the only Council-mandated mission to inspect vessels along Libya's coast. But several states, including Algeria and China, have criticised Operation Irini over insufficient transparency and effectiveness. The Security Council first imposed the arms embargo on Libya, alongside other sanctions in 2011, during the revolution that eventually ousted former leader Muammar Gaddafi. The Council first authorised these vessel inspections in 2016.
