According to the UN rights agency, at least 550 people, including opposition party members and supporters, have been arrested and detained since January.

The UN has called on Ugandan authorities to end arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, and restrictions on press freedom. Security forces have been deployed at opposition rallies, and President Yoweri Museveni is seeking to extend his rule in the January 15 polls.

It says heavily armed security forces have been deployed at locations where presidential candidate Bobby Wine's opposition National United Platform Party was due to hold rallies. President Yoweri Museveni is seeking to extend his 40-year rule in the 15th of January polls.
