Despite the dangers and lack of political influence, their focus remains on saving lives amid unpredictable and hazardous conditions.

Forward positions in eastern Ukraine are the most active combat theaters of the war. Russian drones hunt supply routes, medical teams rely on jammers to carve out what they call safe corridors. Still every trip, in and out, is a gamble. Fields, forests and sleepy towns now a front line in a war of attrition. The Ukrainian Army's 5th Assault Brigade field hospital is the closest medical help in the area. Dug into the hillside, it's been here only a few weeks. Forced to move as the front line continues to shift, with every Russian push west. It's unpredictable. No two days are alike. Only God knows how it will turn out. Of course, it would be better if there were as few wounded soldiers as possible. If there were any injured, we're glad if they can be evacuated and brought to us. We're ready for that. Mortars and small arms echo in the distance as we talk about a ceasefire. He's not a soldier, he says. And looks forward to returning to civilian life. But around here, peace feels a long way off. The idea of the subterranean safe haven so close to the front line is to be able to do field surgeries for the most seriously injured here, stabilize them as quickly as possible and then get them to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Without helicopters, evacuations can be tough and delays fatal. Field doctors say the rules of war haven't changed. Being closer to the fighting means giving their patients a better chance of survival. The team who treated this soldier say they don't know if he made it. Kalina, his code name, says early in the war most of the injuries were minor bullet wounds. Now they're more complex, from drones and shrapnel. For the medics here, part of the job is drawing a line between hope and letting go. The hardest part is to quickly differentiate between the fighters you can help and the ones you can no longer help. Decisions made in European capitals reverberate all the way to the battlefield. But these men don't decide policy, they hold the front line. Here there are no politics, no debates, no partisan arguments. Only the narrow margin between life and death and the men trying to tip the balance.
