Many demonstrators believe the move by Prime Minister Keir Starmer is primarily intended to deflect criticism rather than effect real change.

As the Labour Party holds its annual conference in Liverpool, internal divisions have emerged over the party's approach to Gaza. While grassroots support for Palestine is strong, campaigners allege that party leadership is limiting discussion, with multiple motions on Palestine reportedly excluded from the conference agenda.

Keir Starmer has gone further than any UK Prime Minister has been able or willing to go in recognising Palestine. But for the supporters of Palestine here, that is just the bare minimum and a move that means nothing without concrete action to make a Palestinian state a functioning reality and there is huge scepticism here that Keir Starmer's move was anything other than an attempt to deflect criticism of himself. The latest charade of recognising the state of Palestine is simply a strategic move to try to rinse their blood-drenched hands. Declaring a Palestinian state is almost meaningless. You know, nice gesture but it should have happened 30 years ago. So I don't think that's going to have much, you know, effect or impact on the ground. Israel has learned that it can get away literally with murder. As the Labour Party gathers in Liverpool for its annual party conference, there is significant tension within the Labour movement over Gaza. Support for Palestine gets stronger the lower down the party structures you go. But Palestine Solidarity campaigners say that the party leadership is trying to stifle debate and that 30 motions to talk about Palestine at the conference have been ruled out by the conference organising committee.
