A temporary reprieve for Julian Assange in his fight against extradition to the United States, where espionage charges, his lawyers say, could net him 175 years in jail. But it's not the full appeal hearing he'd hoped for. Not yet. The justices decided that Assange's appeal can go ahead, but only if the US and the UK failed to provide reassurances in his case at a further hearing here on May 20th. The court wants a guarantee that Assange will not receive the death penalty, and the judges rejected the argument that the US charges are politically motivated and therefore contrary to the rules of extradition. In 2010, Assange and his organisation Wikileaks published thousands of documents leaked by the whistleblower Chelsea Manning that revealed alleged US criminality, including torture, extrajudicial killing and rendition by the US government in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US government says the documents were obtained illegally and their publication compromised the safety of sources contained in them. Assange has been fighting extradition for five years while in London's Belmarsh prison. He'd previously spent seven years as a political refugee inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Speaking afterwards, his wife Stella said she was astounded by the decision. What the courts have done has been to invite a political intervention from the United States to send a letter saying it's all OK. I find this astounding.
