Ugandans have voted in tense elections widely expected to extend President Yoweri Museveni's four decades of power. Ahead of the vote, the government had shut down the internet in a move the UN called deeply worrying.

Uganda's national election was disrupted by widespread delays after biometric voting machines failed to function at the scheduled start time. Many voters, some present since early morning, faced long waits before being able to cast their ballots for local and national offices.

The election period saw a heavy security presence in Kampala and a nationwide internet shutdown, which the government said was to prevent misinformation. Opposition supporters and rights groups voiced concerns about transparency and intimidation, though polling stations in the capital remained relatively calm as voting concluded.

As Ugandans lined up at the polls this morning, there was one major hold-up. The biometric machines didn't work, and at the 7am voting start, preparations were still underway. I was here by 6.30am, I happened to be among the ten people who were called to witness the empty boxes, but it is so disappointing and so disgusting. Up to now it is almost a quarter past eight. We wanted to vote early, because we see a lot of this deployment, we are not sure of our safety, we don't know what's going on. I don't expect any challenge. We are Ugandans, we have come to vote, and after voting, go back home. Two hours later, early risers were finally able to cast their ballots, for local members of parliament, women's representatives, and of course presidential candidates. Yoweri Museveni voted in his home area, four hours west of the capital. And his main challenger, Robert Chagulanyi, aka Bobby Wine, cast his ballot in his stronghold near Kampala. In the run-up to the elections, rights groups reported widespread intimidation of the opposition. On election day, heavy security could be seen around Kampala. Due to a nationwide internet shutdown, residents followed events on radio and TV. We are just here, because now our phones are off, we don't have internet, so we are just, the only internet we have is to watch the TV, and whereby we are not really, we are not really focused on the TV that they are going to tell us the truth. While the government claimed the shutdown would curb the spread of misinformation, opposition supporters fear it could make the election period less transparent. After the initial frustration in the morning around the logistics and the non-functioning biometric machines, voting here is finally coming to a close. There was a lot of tension ahead of the elections, but so far the polling stations that we visited around Kampala have been relatively calm. The opening of the ballot boxes marked the end of polling day. Closely observing the process, voters and party agents gather to cheer their candidates and make sure that every vote cast is counted correctly.
