The scale and brutality of this assault will stun the entire world. Alarm sirens sounded in Israel. The Iron Dome, Israel's defence system, was put in place. But the system was quickly overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of projectiles. Soon afterwards, Hamas fighters armed with explosives attacked the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. Attackers on motorbikes or in pick-up trucks used these gaps to reach their targets, most of which were 30 minutes away. Other commandos were launched by sea or in the air. In just two hours, the fighters of the Palestinian terrorist movement Hamas targeted Israeli military bases and kibbutzim. The Nova music festival was the scene of the largest massacre, with over 360 festival-goers killed and 44 taken hostage. In addition to murders, the UN said several victims were subjected to rape, torture and cruel and inhumane treatment. Israel retaliated before 10am, with strikes against the Gaza Strip. Shortly after 11.30am, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his country is at war. In the afternoon, 360,000 army reservists were mobilised to reinforce a 170,000 strong army. By midday, Israeli forces were gaining ground. But it was not until October 10th that the army declared it had retaken all areas attacked by Hamas. By the end of October 7th, 2023, almost 1,000 people had been killed and more than 250 Israelis taken hostage.
