A 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old have been killed in an ambush in Melbourne's west. The boys were on their way home from a basketball game when a gang of youths attacked them. Police are hunting those responsible.

A violent attack in Cobblebank, Melbourne, resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy and serious injuries to his 15-year-old friend. The two boys, who were returning from a basketball game, were ambushed by a group of eight masked individuals armed with machetes. Police believe the attack may be linked to youth gang activity and are focusing resources on identifying and apprehending the offenders, who are thought to be between 16 and 24 years old.

In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man was shot in the Melbourne CBD. The victim, accompanied by three associates, was shot from a passing vehicle and later dropped off at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Police believe the shooter and victim knew each other and are urging witnesses and those involved to contact authorities.

Under the cover of darkness, eight thugs armed with machetes unleash hell on a 12-year-old boy. He trips and falls to the ground as they swing at him, his last moments spent in the company of a kind stranger and paramedics whose efforts proved futile. It is one of the most horrific crimes in a substantial and growing list of crimes of this nature. The children who were murdered were not gang members and it is not okay to remain silent. Just 150 meters around the corner, his friend 15-year-old Dao Akwang was also viciously set upon by the same group. I walked out to the front window of my bedroom and I saw about eight people jumping into a car all holding machetes. The terror unfolding just after eight last night in Cobblebank in Melbourne's west. Witnessing CCDV vision shows that these murders were committed by a large group of male offenders who appeared to be having covered with face masks. They fled the scene in a vehicle that's yet to be identified. The two friends were on their way home after a basketball game when they were both ambushed. There has been occasion where people have been targeted by mistaken identity. There is potential that the offenders know these people and they've been specifically targeted as well. Dao's heartbroken father left with unbearable anguish and anger. This is a basketball player. He's not a criminal. Multiple kids, they just finished basketball. With a message to the community. This is happening to us. We buried in this two week, this month, four kids. The sentiment echoed by a boiler law who used to drive Dao to training. Every day you murder other child innocent so he didn't deserve to die like that. You really can't imagine how we've got to that sort of stage as a society but there's been too many of these sorts of incidences and we have yet to really crack that nut open that explains why. And Rebecca Powell joins us live from police headquarters in Melbourne. Bec, the police have a warning for the gang that attacked the boys. Chris, police say they are throwing every resource that they have available into this and are confident of making arrests within days. Detective Inspector Banks says that this crime has all the hallmarks of youth gang culture and violence. They haven't identified which particular gang is behind this horrific crime but they have a strong sense of which gangs to be zeroing in on from past intelligence. They believe the offenders are likely 16 to 24 years old. Police say it's not a matter of if but when these offenders are caught and anybody with information is still being urged to contact police. And Rebecca, the killing of the boys wasn't the only murder in Melbourne last night. It wasn't, Chris. There was a shooting in the Melbourne CBD at about four this morning. A 26-year-old Seabrook man was on the footpath with three associates when a car pulled up and a shot was fired before the car drove away and it was seen by pedestrians swerving in an erratic manner. The victim was dropped off to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by those three associates who police are also looking for, calling on them to make themselves known. It's believed the shooter and his victim were known to each other but this particularly brazen crime is also high on the list of priorities for police, Chris. Thanks, Rebecca.
