The incident occurred during standard mining operations when explosives detonated unexpectedly before the workers could return to the surface. The mine, which recently reopened under new management, has suspended all operations while SafeWork investigates the cause of the explosion. The community is in shock as authorities work to determine what led to the fatal accident.

This is not how a night shift should end. The sole survivor of the state's worst mining disaster in years airlifted to Orange Hospital, this 24-year-old woman suffering hearing damage and shock after witnessing a horrific explosion which killed two of her colleagues, a 66-year-old man and another 24-year-old woman, both residents of Cobar. I'm in shock, mate, and the community's in shock. It's a terrible thing to have happened. I think everyone is just trying to come to grips with it at the moment. It happened at the Endeavour mine. The underground blast ripped through the site just before four o'clock this morning. It's understood the three workers had set explosives which detonated before they could return to the surface. They were working at the workface when there's been an unexpected explosion. This was standard mining operations. We had some very experienced people in the mine at the time. The silver, lead and zinc mine had only just reopened. It started operating in the 1980s but was placed into care and maintenance in 2020. It's now run by Poly Metals which only days ago said it was confident to significantly ramp up exploration activities. This recent promotional video talking up the mine's potential. The restart marks the beginning of a broader strategy to restore Endeavour as a major producer. All mining at the site has now been suspended with the company placed into a trading halt. There's obviously been a catastrophic failure of a safety system at the mine. In this day and age, that type of accident just should not have happened. It's like any other workplace. You expect to go to work and you expect to come home safe. As Cobar grieves two lives lost, safe work is now investigating to determine what went wrong and hopefully prevent it from happening again.
