In the conservative city of Eliza, eastern Turkey, designer Gamze Ates has established a workshop where women produce handmade crocheted beachwear. This initiative provides employment opportunities for women, many of whom have limited formal education and previously needed family permission to work. 

The project faces criticism from some members of the religious community who question the modesty of the products. However, advocates argue that economic independence helps women gain respect and reduces vulnerability to domestic violence. The workshop serves as a supportive space for women to work and build self-reliance, away from societal and familial pressures.

Eliza, in eastern Turkey. A conservative city, traditional and religious. So how does this crocheted bikini fit in? Designer Gamze Ates gives women a new start producing handmade beachwear. This region is tough. There are few jobs for women outside the home. Many lack a formal education. Some only finished elementary school. Here they can work, making clothing worn by Hollywood celebrities in TV shows and photoshoots. There are the strict religious types. They say this isn't modest, why crochet this? Many are like that. We tell them it's so they don't run around completely naked. Most of the women here had to ask for permission at home before starting work. Nationwide only one-third of women work outside the home. Even in Istanbul, the influence of traditional Islamic values is becoming more noticeable. Under Erdogan, the state religious authority has grown increasingly powerful. But Selime Büyükgöze is fighting back. She works for the women's rights group More Çatı, raising awareness for women's rights and fighting against domestic violence. The economic crisis is creating more poverty, which disproportionately affects women. That makes it all the more difficult for them to escape domestic violence. Women are often not viewed as independent individuals here. That's why in Elize, designer Gamze Ates wants women to achieve greater self-reliance. Ates believes that a profitable business has the power to create lasting change. When a woman contributes to the household budget or isn't reliant on her husband for basic needs, in his eyes she becomes more valuable. Instead of being beaten, she'll gain respect. There are no men in this workshop. It's a space for the women to be amongst themselves, away from family and the expectations placed on them at home.
