While the immediate threat has passed, officials are advising residents and visitors to remain cautious, as strong currents and dangerous conditions may persist for some time.

Captain Nicholas Wurst of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu highlighted the careful decision-making involved in closing commercial harbors and evacuating areas. He commended the public for their quick response and adherence to safety instructions, which contributed to a positive outcome. Authorities stress the importance of continuing to follow expert advice as conditions normalize.

And I'm here with Captain Nicholas Wurst, who is the commander of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu and captain of the Port of Honolulu. And he is the perfect man for us to be talking to right now. And thank God we're talking under these circumstances where things are slowly returning back to normal here as opposed to the alternative of what a tsunami could have done here in Hawaii. And you really had no idea how bad it was going to be when the warnings came out. So we certainly always heed the science from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and listen to the experts and then we take that into account when we're making these decisions. And certainly, you know, a lot of anxiety and stress from folks during these type of situations and the decision as the captain of the port to shut down commercial harbors, to evacuate, to hold vessels off, that's not a decision I take lightly at all. Well, impressive to see how Hawaiians really responded quickly and not just here on the Coast Guard base, but also people were trying to get to higher ground. People heeded the warnings for the most part and we ended up, I think, with probably the best possible result here, which is a sunny blue sky day in Hawaii. And thankfully, it wasn't nearly as bad. It wasn't bad. It could have been bad, but it wasn't.

The announcement comes as international pressure mounts on Israel over the war in Gaza and the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave.
