Trump accused Powell of being too political and unsuitable for the role, highlighting ongoing tensions between the White House and the independent central bank. Meanwhile, the administration is working to finalize a series of international trade deals ahead of a self-imposed deadline. While agreements have been reached with countries such as Korea, Japan, and the European Union, negotiations with Canada and Mexico are ongoing, with some progress reported with Mexico. Trade talks with Canada have been complicated by political differences, including Canada's stance on Palestine, which Trump cited as a potential obstacle to a deal.

Trump slams Powell as administration continues push for trade deals

We're less than 24 hours away from President Trump's August 1st trade deal deadline. The president is speaking with leaders of multiple countries today in an effort to get those final deals done. Mr. Trump vowed to secure 90 deals in 90 days, but as of now, the administration has fallen short of that goal. Several countries have reached trade deals, while others are facing tariff rates of up to 50 percent. Let's bring in CBS News White House reporter Willie James Inman for more on this. Willie, thanks for joining us. It's really the final countdown. You've had a few countries secure trade deals this week. Will we see any more last minute agreements coming through? Hey there, Jolene, good to see you. Well, the press secretary alluded to that just moments ago when she spoke with reporters here at the White House during that briefing. She mentioned that President Trump has been engaging with foreign leaders and that he could potentially announce something with another foreign leader in terms of those deals. We, of course, have seen several countries in recent days, Korea, for instance, the president announcing a deal with that country, but also a major deal and framework struck with the European Union. I know you have been talking about that on our air for quite some time. That is a significant development because the U.S. and the E.U. have been in this tit for tat trade war, if you could describe it, but there are some other major partners that have been able to negotiate trade deals as well, including Japan, you see on your screen there. But Mexico, still elusive with Canada and Mexico, those two nations, still no major deals struck with those nations, although there was a positive development on the side of Mexico. Things are being extended for 90 days after a conversation between the president of Mexico and President Trump today, which seems to be a positive development for this White House joint. The president also took to truth social saying the fact that Canada is backing a Palestinian state that that could, quote, make it very hard for us to make a trade deal. You know, Canada is obviously not the only country doing this. France and Portugal also moving to recognize Palestine. How is that going to be impacting negotiations over the next less than 24 hours? Yeah, and I'm glad you pointed that out because the president has still negotiated those deals with the E.U. You had him sitting down with Keir Starmer, the British prime minister in the U.K. has moved to do the same thing as well in terms of recognizing Palestine as a state. But nonetheless, the president seems to be picking a fight with Canada. This isn't the first time that the president has picked a fight with Canada. Previously, the Canadian government's decision to charge a tax on digital services led to a breakdown of trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada. But they backed off of that tax. And so you had those conversations continue. But it's anyone's guess in terms of what will happen next between the U.S. and Canada trade relationship. We know there has been some tension growing there. But still, nonetheless, there is a major amount of trade between the U.S. and Canada. You have vehicles, for instance, lumber coming from the Canadian side, energy as well. So a lot of goods and services affected on each side of the border. And Canadians will tell you, business leaders there will tell you that Canada needs the U.S., but the U.S. needs Canada just as much, Joelynn. Well, Willie James, I want to know, President Trump is also quite busy today lashing out at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell over the central bank's decision to hold interest rate study for the fifth time this year. He posted on Truth Social accusing Powell of in part being, quote, too angry, too stupid and too political to have the job of Fed chair. Now, yesterday, this was very noteworthy. Two of the Fed's board members dissented from the interest rate decision. A third abstained. One of those policymakers is a Trump appointee who's on the shortlist to replace Chair Powell. Powell, by the way, also appointed by President Trump. But this would happen next year when Powell's term is up. And it's, you know, raising concerns over Trump's influence over the independent central bank. What more do you know about where things stand between the Fed and the White House right now? Yeah, I'm glad you broke all of that down, Joelynn, because I know you're an expert on not only the Fed, but the economy as a whole. And part of the focus for President Trump has been to urge the Fed chairman, who is independent, along with the Board of Governors, to lower those interest rates. We saw them in that picture you see there. There was some video with it, as well, where he essentially joked about it, lowering those rates as they walked off to the side, walked into the sunset, so to speak. But the president has still continued to bring up that pressure on Jerome Powell to compel him to lower those interest rates. We saw yesterday this isn't what the president would have wanted, for rates to stay steady, stay the same. It's anyone's guess in terms of what happens at the next Fed meeting. But President Trump has consistently been on the forefront, criticizing Powell, urging him to lower those rates. But other White House officials have been, as well. So it's perhaps no surprise to see that true social post that we saw there, Joelynn. Well, we're tracking the CME FedWatch tool, and we do have higher expectations of a rate cut come September.
