Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race, calling Biden "the worst President" and stating he was never fit for office. Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance, echoed these sentiments, labeling Biden as the worst president in his lifetime. House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that Republicans might pursue legal action to challenge any attempt by Democrats to nominate a new candidate, arguing it would be unlawful based on certain states' rules.

Trump asserted on social media that Biden had been detrimental to the country and claimed Democrats were now discarding him. Election law experts, however, believe legal attempts by Republicans to block the nomination of a new Democratic candidate are unlikely to succeed. Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, has received Biden's endorsement to become the new Democratic nominee.

Some Republican voters, particularly in Ohio, have expressed approval of Biden’s decision to exit the race. One voter remarked that Biden's departure made them hopeful for Trump's return. Trump expressed confidence that Harris would be an easier opponent to defeat if she becomes the Democratic nominee.

Prior to the announcement, US House Speaker Mike Johnson hinted that Republicans may take legal action against an attempt by the Democrats to put forward a new nominee. 14 million Democrats voted to make Joe Biden the nominee, so it would be wrong and I think unlawful in accordance to some of these states' rules for a handful of people to go in a back room and switch it out because they don't like the candidate any longer. That's not how this is supposed to work. So I think they would run into some legal impediments in at least a few of these jurisdictions and I think there will be a compelling case to be made that that shouldn't happen. A move that has little chance of succeeding, according to election law experts. Here in Ohio, some Republican voters welcomed Biden's announcement. Look at what he's done to our world. I just, I think Donald Trump should have been back a long time ago. So I mean, it makes me really happy to know he's out. Kamala Harris, Biden's vice president, has received his endorsement to become the new Democratic nominee. Trump says he believes she will be easier to beat than Biden if she's officially nominated.
