Hurricane Kiko is on a long path toward Hawaii, while Lorena is set to slam into Mexico this weekend.

Tropical activity in the Pacific is increasing, with a new tropical depression expected to form near Hawaii as dry air gives way to more moisture. Hurricane Kiko, currently a Category 2 storm, is being tracked as it moves slowly westward and is expected to approach Hawaii in the coming days, potentially bringing direct impacts to the islands.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lorena is forecast to make landfall in Mexico, bringing significant wind and rain. The rainfall from Lorena is expected to extend into the southwestern United States and southern plains, with areas such as El Paso projected to receive 1 to 2 inches of rain.

almost directly west for a time, and then we begin to lift a little bit north of the islands. Overall, we've had a lot of dry air in its place, in its path, and you can see all this huge area of very dry, dusty Saharan air, resembling more of a July-like pattern, but that's going to give way to a little bit more moisture, and there's a high likelihood that between the 4th of September, which is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, that we'll have a new tropical depression form out this way. But again, while we have dry air in place through Wednesday, we're going to see that kind of give way to an increasing trend of moisture next week, and that system is going to be gradually lifting a little bit north of the islands. We do not expect it to impact the east coast of the U.S. Now, here's Lorena, a tropical storm and Category 2 Hurricane Kiko in the East Pacific. These stories have a little more longevity. Kiko is a storm that we're going to be tracking for the next 7 to 10 days as it's moving west. It's only moving at 6 miles per hour, but it did become a Category 2 Hurricane at 2 p.m. Pacific Time, 11 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time. That was 5 Eastern today, and over the next 7 days, we're going to be watching it get closer to Hawaii, so we expect Wednesday and Thursday of next week it to be very close to the islands, and we'll have some direct impacts there most likely in the middle of next week from Kiko. Lorena has a big story line that we've been talking about impacting Texas this week. Now, this is going to be a Mexican tropical storm landfall most likely, but it's going to send a lot of wind and rain into Mexico, and that rainfall is going to expand up into the southwest and eventually into the southern plains as well. So again, 1 to 2 inches of rain in El Paso through Sunday from this one.
