Family and friends are remembering the life of a much-loved Sydney surfer killed in a shark attack. In the aftermath of Mercury Psillakis' death, the Premier has paused on a trial to remove shark nets at three of the state's beaches.

A respected local surfer, Mercury Salarchus, lost his life in a shark attack at Dee Why Beach. Before the attack, he alerted other surfers to the danger, helping them reach safety. Authorities believe the shark responsible was a three and a half metre long great white. In response, beaches at Dee Why and Long Reef have been closed, and surveillance patrols have increased, including the use of drones and smart drum lines. The incident has prompted the state Premier to pause a trial to remove sharknets at three NSW beaches until a full investigation is completed.

Much loved surfer, Mercury Salarchus, killed in a brutal shark attack yesterday morning, leaving his wife, daughter and twin brother spending Father's Day in mourning. It's a lot to process, the whys, the what ifs, could things have been different? Today the Northern Beach's local is being hailed a hero. He saw the shark, sounded the alarm to other surfers that were close by, letting everyone know there was a danger present and trying to act and get everyone back in safely and unfortunately that ultimately has cost him his life. The search is continuing for the shark that killed him, which authorities now believe was a three and a half metre long great white. Surf Lifesaving NSW in conjunction with Northern Beach's council lifeguards are providing surveillance patrols with skis and UAV drones. Crews scoured the water with the help of two additional smart drum lines, while the beaches at D.Y. and Long Reef remained closed. The beach closure will remain in place for today and probably tomorrow. The attack comes less than a week after sharknets returned to NSW beaches. In the wake of yesterday's tragedy, the Premier has put a trial to remove sharknets at three NSW beaches on pause, while a report into the deadly attack is handed down. Given this terrible event, we believe the right thing to do is to wait for the investigation to come back about how this happened, what happened and the circumstances surrounding it.
