Major airlines including Turkish Airlines, Iberia, Avianca, Air Europa, Estela, and Laser have halted flights to and from Venezuela. The US warning came shortly after the US designated the Soms drug cartel as a terrorist group, which it alleges is led by Venezuela's president.

The USFAA alert issued last Friday urges pilots to use extreme caution due to the worsening security situation and increased military activity in the region. This has caused widespread cancellations by Venezuelan and international airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Iberia, Avianca and many more. Spanish airline Air Europa, Estela and Laser announced the suspension of their flights to Venezuela. Over the weekend, other international airlines had already adopted similar measures. The warning comes days after the US designated the drug cartel of the Soms as a terrorist group. A group it alleges is led by Venezuela's president.
