A tornado damaged a barn in Middlefield on Tuesday night, leaving horses injured as severe weather passed through the area.

A sudden EF0 tornado struck Middlefield in Geauga County, Ohio, causing substantial damage to a local farm's barn and injuring several horses. The tornado, which reached speeds of 85 miles per hour, hit without warning and resulted in the barn being destroyed and debris scattered across the property and nearby highway.

One horse was euthanized due to a broken leg caused by flying debris, while others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment for joint infections. The tornado was not preceded by a National Weather Service warning, highlighting the challenges of predicting such brief and localized storms. Efforts are underway to support the recovery of the injured horses, including a fundraising campaign.

It looks to be little to no weather threat for plans tonight, but this is what happened after that pop up storm unleashed more than rain and lightning in Geauga County just a couple of days ago. News has my a lock. It takes us to the farm that's now cleaning up after a tornado hit without warning. Casey Pierce was shocked when she saw most of her barn out on the highway and and I thought, wow, our barns in 528. That's probably not a good thing. An EF0 tornado moving 85 miles per hour touched down in Middlefield Tuesday night. Damaging buildings, including Pierce's barn and injuring her horses. I had a terrible feeling that in in seeing all of the the wreckage, let's say that there couldn't not be at least a few horses that were hurt when they walked to the back of the farm. They noticed pieces of this debris hit one of the horses breaking its leg. We had actually put her to sleep. She had a baby with her and she was also a pregnant horse, so it was a little bit of a concern for her. So and then her pasture mate who also had a baby with her was was injured and had lacerations all along her backside and down through her legs at Casey's training center. They spend time breeding and training these horses. What's really hard is they're part of my family, but they're also part of my customers family because we do boarding and training so. Many of the horses here I don't own. They're sent here to further their education. Casey says what hurts the most is there was nothing they could have done to prevent the damage. There was no warning. News 5 meteorologist Katie McGraw has spent years tracking tornadoes in Northeast Ohio. EF1s, EF0s are the most common tornadoes that we see, not only in Ohio, but across the United States. They are just more common, but there were no tornado warnings from the National Weather Service for the last two that hit the area. But we're looking for is really bright greens, really bright reds kind of wrapped around each other. That's not really showing that, and sometimes with these tornadoes you can actually when they're so brief in between scans you can miss the best of the rotation, hence why it might have not gotten a warning. Knowing that tornadoes like that can happen in this area, how do you plan to prepare for those moving forward? You really can't. You just really can't. And other than having more flashlights and things like that on on hand, and most of the time in a storm, horses are better off outside. Two of the horses, 9 year old Hope and four year old Josie are both being treated for joint infections at a hospital in Burton, Ohio. They believe they're going to make a full recovery, but the joint infection is very dangerous and can be fatal to help support the horses recovery.
