Thousands of families have fled al-Fashir in Sudan's North Darfur state due to violence, abductions, and an 18-month siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Many walked for days without food before reaching camps, where they received aid for the first time in years. Humanitarian access remains limited, with RSF fighters blocking deliveries and famine declared in both al-Fashir and Kadugli, South Kurdufan. 

The World Food Program reports that while millions are receiving some assistance, most rations have been reduced and resources are expected to run out by January. Over 21 million Sudanese are now in desperate need of aid, and agencies warn that without improved access and more funding, hunger will worsen in the coming months.

These displaced families are from al-Fashir in Sudan's north Darfur state. They escaped killings, abduction and hunger, a result of the 18-month siege of the city by the paramilitary rapid support forces. Many walked for days without anything to eat before reaching this camp in Tawila, a town about 70 kilometers away. And Gham and her children arrived in late October. It's the first time in more than two years that they've received food aid. When we get assistance, then we can eat, but we need blankets and sweaters to endure this cold and prevent infections. Communitarian assistance is being distributed in parts of Sudan where the violence between the RSF and the army has subsided. But in al-Fashir, where RSF fighters have blocked aid deliveries, famine has been declared. The United Nations has also confirmed famine in Kadugli in south Kurdufan. The paramilitary group cut off the city from food and medical care for months before aid agencies finally made it in last month. Severe food shortages are being reported in neighboring Delenge, where fighters are also active. We in this city have faced all kinds of suffering, like starvation, sickness and lack of education. The World Food Program says while access is a challenge, it's not the only difficulty teams face. And the other problem is resources, where we're reaching four to five million people each month, but most of those people are receiving reduced rations. And come January, we simply won't have the resources in the pipeline in order to be able to continue providing that level of assistance. Two and a half years of conflict have left more than 21 million Sudanese in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
