Officials in the French territory of Mayotte have expressed concerns about the death toll from Cyclone Chido, suggesting it could be significant. As of now, 14 deaths have been confirmed. The cyclone unleashed severe devastation across the archipelago, including winds exceeding 200 kilometers an hour and heavy rainfall, which obliterated many hillside shantytowns and even some sturdier structures. Essential services such as power, water, and internet have been severely disrupted. 

Cyclone Chido, believed to be the most destructive storm in Mayotte in 90 years, forced residents into makeshift shelters during the height of its power. Video footage captured during the cyclone showed individuals using physical means to protect against the harsh conditions. As the island begins recovery efforts, preliminary work includes burying the deceased and awaiting external assistance.

France has initiated the dispatch of substantial aid to Mayotte, planning to deliver aid by both air and sea. More than 100 rescue workers and firefighters have already been dispatched, and further assistance is anticipated. Immediate and medium-term recovery plans are focusing on restoring water, food supplies, and support for critical infrastructure, including prisons and detention centers.

Right now, the official death toll stands at 14. Cyclone Chido left absolutely apocalyptic scenes across the three islands that make up the archipelago, which is less than half the size of the city of Toronto and sandwiched between Madagascar and Mozambique. Ferocious winds of over 200 kilometers an hour as well as torrential rain devastated the many hillside shantytowns that are home to most of the 320,000 residents. Other buildings that were built to withstand hurricanes have reportedly collapsed. Power and water supplies, along with the internet there, are either down or disrupted. The cyclone is believed to have been the worst Mayotte has experienced in 90 years. This video shows things at the height of the storm, with people sheltering wherever they could find cover, as well as three men seen here combining to keep a door closed and keep the wind out. Now that the cyclone has passed, the grim task of digging graves is underway there, as the island waits for outside help to arrive. France has moved to quickly send tons of aid by plane and ship to Mayotte, along with more than 100 rescue workers and firefighters, and more are expected to arrive tomorrow.
